Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT)

Mindfulness at Manchester Centre for CBT - for Stress Reduction, Wellbeing and to help deal with symptoms of Anxiety and Depression

Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) is now being acknowledged by GPs, Healthcare Professionals who work in the field of mental health, Psychologists, Counsellors and Psychotherapists as a helpful way to manage anxiety and depression and deal with stress. Anyone can benefit from learning mindfulness skills. Mindfulness is not new it has been helping people to overcome stress and worry for centuries, though more recently it has become recognised as a practical way to help individuals manage distressing psychological symptoms such as anxiety, fear, depression and worry.

Mindfulness and Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) is an acknowledged way of gaining control over those negative emotions and thoughts that just seem overwhelming at times and difficult to let go of. Mindfulness was introduced and developed by John Kabat-Zinn in order to help people manage stress as well as health problems. It has been used effectively to help manage depression (and relapse).

Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy is now recommended in the UK National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) Guidelines for the treatment of recurrent depression conditions however it is also becoming increasingly used to help with other psychological conditions connected with anxiety and stress. Mindfulness can help you to overcome the tendency to become distressed about past events (which can lead to depression) or the annoying habit of worrying about the future (often the cause of Anxiety). With practice you can learn to reduce everyday stressors and live more fully and at ease with yourself and others. This in turn can improve relationships, enhance wellbeing, increase your enjoyment and appreciation of life.
